Players can not only zoom in and out or unlock and rotate the camera like in most standard Photo Modes, but they can also add or remove characters from the shot, move and pose NPCs, and add a variety of filters and effects for unique and spooky captures. New to the remaster of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is a sophisticated Photo Mode. Given the locations of these lanterns, it is possible to need to replay entire sections of the game if the player dies before reaching a save point, which can quickly become frustrating. Players need to approach these lanterns to autosave and select them to perform a manual save. Less optimized are the save mechanics, which, like Resident Evil's typewriters, rely on a system of lanterns in various areas around each stage. The reach-out mechanic, though imperative to the gameplay vision of original Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse director Shibata, feels a little outdated, though it does offer an avenue for unique scares. The girls also move fairly slowly even when running, which is standard for the survival horror genre but feels noticeable when compared to other titles like Phasmophobia or Resident Evil. Thankfully, it is possible and easy to remap controls for a more customized gameplay experience. Controls are still somewhat clunky, however, as is the case with most games in the Fatal Frame series, and they may take some getting used to. Players can also earn points for each image they capture that can then be traded for cosmetics and other in-game goodies.įatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse's controls, while not yet optimized for mouse and keyboard, work fairly well on a controller and include haptic feedback. Each girl is equipped with a weak flashlight to illuminate the dark corridors of Rogetsu Hall and the other stages, and players can shine this light around each stage to find glowing objects. Occasionally, they can also use the Camera Obscura to reveal hints about where to go next. Similar to other popular survival horror games, in Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, players will progress the story and recover Ruka's and the other girls' memories primarily in the form of notes, journal entries, and newspaper clippings. Related: There's Only One Revival We Want After Silent Hill's Then, players will take the role of Ruka Minazuki, who seeks to learn not only what happened to Madoka and Misaki, but also to recover her own lost memories. At the start of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, players control Madoka Tsukimori, one of the five girls who went missing, who traveled to the island with her friend Misaki Aso, to try and remember what happened all those years ago.
